Old Dog, New Tricks
Old Dog, New Tricks
Garner Senior had been really struggling to get amongst the barbel this year on the Kennet, so I enlisted the help of my old friend and top guide Steve Pope to take him out for the day to a very private stretch of the river below Thatcham.
Fishing hemp and caster Dad had a great day finishing up with six barbel to 8lb 12oz, putting his recent poor spell well and truly behind him. Fishing with a bunch of casters superglued to the hair was new to him, and something that I am sure he will use to good effect in the seasons to come.
It was lovely to get back on a stretch of river that we first fished more than twenty years ago. Although the fishing may have changed, with less but much bigger fish now being present, it was great to get out and re-live old memories with Dad. I hope I still have his enthusiasm and stamina when I pass 70 that’s for sure!
If anyone is looking to get to grips with barbel fishing, or wants a really special day out then have a look at Steve’s website: www.stevepopebarbelfishing.co.uk, you won’t be disappointed!
